Position: Communications Manager
Schedule: Full-time Contract
Location: TeachUNITED office in Nairobi, Kenya or Arusha, Tanzania, and travel within the region to meet the needs of the position or attend regional events as needed.
Reports to: Tanzania Program Lead
Term: 12 months, with possibility of extension based on job performance and availability of project-based funding
Salary: $18,000 per year
Type: This position is a project-based contract position

Position Overview
The Communications Manager will lead internal and external communications for TeachUNITED’s programs in Africa. This role will support communications for branding, and dissemination of program results to stakeholders, including government, funders, partners, and the community. Additionally, they will oversee TeachUNITED’s communications and social media strategy across Africa.
Roles and Responsibilities
Communications Strategy and Execution
- Develop and implement a communications plan aligned with TeachUNITED’s and funders’ branding and messaging guidelines.
- Manage storytelling and media content creation to showcase program milestones and impact.
- Prepare monthly newsletters, partner updates, and social media stories.
Internal & Partner Communications
- Coordinate with local NGO partners and government stakeholders to ensure consistent program messaging.
- Create internal toolkits, FAQs, and briefing documents for staff and partners.
- Support coaches and field staff with communication templates and materials.
- Maintain a photo and video database; lead the creation of photo essays, teacher/student stories, and case studies.
Event and Visit Coordination
- Support high-profile field visits, workshops, and government stakeholder events.
- Prepare talking points, signage, and visibility materials for key events.
Monitoring, Learning & Reporting
- Collaborate with MEL team to translate data into compelling reports and visual formats.
- Draft reports, blog posts, and presentations that communicate project progress and impact.
Scope of Progress and Promotion
- This position will be adjusted to the need defined by TeachUNITED in the partner regions and its continuity will depend on the results obtained in said position.
Location and Additional Duties
- This role may travel to multiple locations in Tanzania and occasionally within Kenya. Other development requests and location requirements will be discussed with the manager as needed
- Other duties may be assigned in support of TeachUNITED’s mission, programs, and team.
Candidate Profile
Required Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or related field.
- Strong writing, editing, and visual storytelling skills.
- Experience working with rural or low-resource communities a plus.
- Can achieve results while working independently, and willing to ask for help as needed.
- Excellent follow-through on every request; highly organized and detail-oriented.
- Proficiency with basic office tools (Google Suite, Microsoft Word, Excel).
- More advanced spreadsheet skills, familiarity with Salesforce and/or graphic design skills a plus.
- At least 8 years’ experience in communications, including social media strategy and promotion
- Exhibit excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills.
- Passion and positive energy to be part of a non-profit team, willingness to collaborate, and lead the development of new programs.
