Tanzania Program Lead

Position: Tanzania Program Lead

Schedule: Full-time Contract

Location: Arusha, Tanzania required + travel within the region to meet the needs of the position or attend regional events as needed.

Reports to: Africa Director

Term: 12 months, with possibility of extension based on job performance and availability of project-based funding.

Salary: $40,000 per year

TeachUNITED is an international non-profit dedicated to improving student outcomes by bridging the equity gap for teachers. By providing access to coaching and training programs to teachers and administrators in rural and underserved communities, we empower educators where the disparity is most acute. A rapidly growing organization, TeachUNITED reaches thousands of teachers and children with a goal of improving education for 3 million students by 2030.

Position Overview

The Program Lead – Tanzania will lead the implementation of TeachUNITED’s education programming in Tanzania, including a multi-year funded teacher training project. This role requires a dynamic leader with experience managing large-scale education initiatives, navigating government relationships, and driving operational excellence.

The Program Lead will oversee in-country programming, manage local staff and partners, serve as a primary liaison with government stakeholders, and ensure that activities are implemented with fidelity, on time, and within budget. They will also support fundraising and donor reporting in collaboration with TU’s global team.

Roles and Responsibilities

Program Management and Implementation

  • Oversee Program Delivery and Team Leadership: Lead and manage a dedicated team to implement TeachUNITED’s teacher training programs, including the New Teacher Bootcamp and Master Teacher Training Program.
  • Coordinate Local Teams: Supervise and provide guidance to local teams involved in program delivery, ensuring effective communication and alignment with program goals.
  • Program Monitoring and Evaluation: Work with the Monitoring and Evaluation team to track program impact, gather data, and report findings to stakeholders to support continuous improvement.
  • Event Coordination: Organize and lead stakeholder events, workshops, and training sessions, working with partners to ensure successful execution and strong participation.

Government and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Liaison with Government Bodies: Serve as the primary point of contact between TeachUNITED and government agencies in Tanzania, fostering positive relationships to support program alignment with national education objectives.
  • Serve as TeachUNITED’s key representative in Tanzania for government engagement, including MoUs, approvals, and alignment with national education goals.
  • Represent TU in stakeholder meetings, networks, conferences, and donor forums.

Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning

  • Oversee M&E Manager and MEL activities.
  • Use data to drive continuous improvement, identify challenges, and document success stories.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of program results and learning.

Communication and Reporting

  • Regular Reporting: Prepare and present reports on program progress, key metrics for internal teams, government partners, and donors.
  • Public Relations Support: Represent TeachUNITED in meetings, conferences, and networking events (when needed), sharing the organization’s mission and impact with external audiences.
  • Content Development: Support the creation of program-related content for media and public relations, including case studies, impact stories, and government reports.

Additional Duties

  • Other duties may be assigned in support of TeachUNITED’s mission, programs, and team.

Candidate Profile

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Development, Public Policy, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
  • 8–10+ years of experience in senior program leadership, with at least 3–5 years managing donor-funded education projects in Tanzania or East Africa.
  • Strong understanding of the Tanzanian education system, policies, and challenges.
  • Experience with institutional donors (e.g., USAID, Mastercard Foundation, EU, DFID) and navigating complex compliance environments.
  • Proficiency with Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Gmail).
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Experience working on large-scale educational programs with government partnerships.
  • Familiarity with teacher training and professional development programs.
  • Proven ability to manage complex projects with multiple stakeholders.
  • Fluency in Swahili and English.
