Knight-Hennessy Scholars 2027 at Stanford University

Applications for the 2027 Knight-Hennessy Scholars cohort are still open. The KHS application deadline is October 6, 2026, at 1:00 pm Pacific Time. Applications submitted in this cycle are for entry in 2027. 

Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS) combines support for Stanford graduate study with leadership development. Through the King Global Leadership Program, scholars participate in workshops, talks, projects and other activities that complement their academic programmes and encourage collaboration across disciplines and cultures. KHS selection and Stanford graduate admission are separate. You normally need two applications, and becoming a scholar requires admission to an eligible Stanford degree programme. The application guidance explains how the processes fit together.

Funding and benefits

KHS provides funding for up to three years for the degree covered by your admission to the scholarship.

During the funded period, support includes:

• Tuition and associated fees.
• A stipend for living and academic expenses.
• An allowance for one annual economy-class return trip to and from Stanford.
• A one-time allowance for new scholars toward relocation and/or technology costs.

Second- and third-year scholars may apply for additional academic-enrichment funding. Support for an additional degree requires approval and remains within the three-year funding limit.

For programmes lasting longer than three years, subsequent support follows the relevant department or school’s standard funding commitment. Shorter degrees receive funding according to their duration.

KHS does not reimburse taxes, and funding for Doctor of Medicine students excludes their first summer. Review the official funding page before planning your budget.

Eligibility: who can apply?

For the 2027 cohort:

• Your first bachelor’s degree, or recognised equivalent, must have been earned in January 2020 or later.
• If you served in your country’s military, the eligibility window extends to January 2018 or later.
• If you are still an undergraduate, you must graduate by September 2027.
• A later degree does not reset the first-degree eligibility window.

Existing Stanford admission or enrolment

You may apply with deferred Stanford admission if your degree and KHS enrolment begin together in 2027.

Current Stanford graduate students may apply in connection with a new graduate degree starting in 2027. A separate pathway allows students beginning a Stanford Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme in 2026 to apply for KHS entry in their second year.

Students enrolled in 2025 or earlier cannot obtain KHS support for their current degree. KHS offers cannot be deferred.

Some existing fellowships also restrict eligibility. The Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity Graduate Fellowships and Shoucheng Zhang Graduate Fellowship cannot be combined with KHS or discontinued to apply. Consult the official FAQs for these pathways and restrictions.

Eligible graduate programmes

KHS supports eligible full-time master’s, doctoral and professional degrees. Explore Stanford’s graduate programme directory.

The published exclusions include:

• Honors Cooperative Program.
• Master of Liberal Arts.
• Doctor of Science of Law.
• Master of Legal Studies.
• Coterminal degrees.
• A master’s degree added within an existing Stanford PhD discipline.

Current coterminal students may qualify by applying externally to a new full-time degree beginning alongside KHS.

The funding table mentions Master of Legal Studies, but the eligibility page explicitly excludes it. Its appearance in the funding table should not be treated as confirmation of eligibility.

What the selection committee looks for

KHS assesses applicants against three criteria:

• Independence of Thought: Intellectual curiosity, careful reasoning, openness to unfamiliar perspectives and creative approaches to problems.
• Purposeful Leadership: Taking initiative, making principled decisions, persevering through difficulties and helping others achieve meaningful results.
• Civic Mindset: Acting with integrity, respecting different perspectives and contributing to the welfare of others.

These criteria guide selection; they are different from the basic rules determining whether you may apply. Meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee an award. Read the official selection criteria.

Application materials

Prepare the following components for your KHS application.

Online application

Complete the online form and submit your materials in English through the application system. KHS does not accept application materials by email or post. See the application instructions.

Résumé

Prepare a one-page résumé on US Letter paper, measuring 8.5 × 11 inches. Present your experience in reverse chronological order, use a readable font and omit photographs and hyperlinks. Follow the résumé guidance.

Academic records

Provide undergraduate—and, where applicable, graduate—transcripts from institutions you attended for at least one academic year. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable; an official self-reporting form is available if you cannot obtain one.

Include evidence of your awarded degree and its conferral date when applicable. Documents issued in another language need an official English translation. Read the transcript requirements.

Two recommendation letters

Choose two recommenders who know your work and can provide specific evidence of your qualifications and contributions.

Register them early so they receive their submission links. Letters are due by the application deadline, but you must submit your own application on time even if a letter remains outstanding.

You may not draft, edit, translate or submit your own recommendation letters. Check the recommendation requirements.

Short answers and essay

The application requires three short responses and one essay:

• Academic and professional plans: 250 words maximum.
• Experiences involving different perspectives, courage and unmet expectations: 250 words combined.
• Eight unexpected but true facts about yourself: 150 words combined.
• A personal essay exploring the influences that shaped you: 550 words maximum.

Test results, where required

KHS follows your intended graduate programme’s testing requirements, including English-language testing where applicable. If that programme requires no standardised tests, KHS does not independently require them.

Required scores must reach KHS by the later of the KHS deadline or your graduate programme’s application deadline. This reporting rule does not extend either application deadline.

KHS sets no minimum grade or test-score threshold of its own; your graduate programme may impose minimums. Consult the official test-score policy.

How to apply

1. Check your eligibility and identify a qualifying Stanford degree.
2. Confirm both deadlines, including your department’s requirements for KHS applicants.
3. Open your KHS and graduate applications and register your recommenders.
4. Prepare each application’s materials, responding to its specific requirements.
5. Submit both applications on time and monitor your application status.

Applicants with qualifying deferred admission, and eligible first-year Stanford PhD applicants, do not need a new graduate application solely to apply to KHS. Follow the official application process.

Application fees

The KHS application is free. Graduate programmes have separate fee policies, and KHS cannot waive those charges. Check your programme’s rules and the relevant Stanford application-fee and waiver guidance.

Stanford graduate programme application

Submit your graduate application by whichever comes first:

• Your programme’s application deadline for KHS applicants; or
• December 1, 2026.

December 1 does not override an earlier programme deadline. A later deadline for ordinary graduate admission also does not extend the KHS deadline. Confirm the date directly with your programme using the official KHS deadline guidance.

MBA applicants: Round 1 has closed

For the Master of Business Administration (MBA), KHS applicants needed to meet Round 1: September 9, 2026, at 4:00 pm Pacific Time. That deadline has passed, although the KHS application remains open. See Stanford MBA scholarship information.

If you already hold MBA admission deferred to September 2027, you may still apply to KHS for the matching cohort, provided you meet the remaining requirements. The official FAQs describe this exception.

Selection process and timeline

KHS and Stanford graduate programmes evaluate applicants separately. Their decisions follow different schedules, and becoming a KHS finalist does not guarantee graduate admission.

The published KHS timetable is:

• January 2027: Video invitations issued throughout the month.
• January 27, 2027: Finalist notifications.
• Mid-February 2027: Online individual interviews.
• March 5–6, 2027: Immersion Weekend.
• March 16, 2027: Scholar notifications.

Video statement

Only invited applicants submit a video. The invitation provides the deadline, typically 5–10 days after receipt.

The video may last no more than two minutes and must be recorded through the application system. The task involves teaching something to your prospective fellow scholars. Follow the video statement instructions.

Finalist Experience

Invited finalists participate in an online individual interview and Immersion Weekend at Stanford.

Attendance at Immersion Weekend is required, subject to the limited exceptions described in the official guidance. KHS covers specified travel expenses within university rules, including airfare, accommodation and campus meals. Review the Finalist Experience requirements.

Before you submit

Use this final checklist:

• Confirm that your first-degree date meets the applicable eligibility window.
• Check that your intended degree and entry year qualify.
• Record both application deadlines and the relevant time zones.
• Confirm that your recommenders understand their submission deadline.
• Check document formats, translations and response limits.
• Review your applications for accuracy and completeness.

Keep your application your own

KHS permits limited AI assistance, such as early brainstorming and minor spelling or grammar corrections. It prohibits AI-generated application drafts, substantive response outlines, major rewrites and invented interpretations of your experiences.
