Head of Finance

Background:

The Urban Movement Innovation Fund (UMI Fund) is a donor collaborative, dedicated to strengthening the climate movement by supporting community-led and frontline organisations, grassroots initiatives, and innovative climate solutions. They connect funders and grantees, amplify impactful climate work, and drive collaboration across sectors.

Description:

UMI Fund is looking for a collaborative and experienced Head of Finance to lead the implementation and strengthen their financial and accounting functions globally. This role is ideal for someone who thrives on both strategy and detail, enjoys building systems that actually work, and wants to make a real impact in a mission-driven team. This strategic and hands-on role is responsible for ensuring the integrity, efficiency, and compliance of our financial and accounting systems and reporting.

You’ll be responsible for implementing financial and accounting systems and keeping our financial operations running smoothly and efficiently—from designing smart processes and ensuring compliance, to producing clear reports that support good decision-making. We’re especially keen to work with someone who’s excited about using digital and AI tools to improve how we work, and who brings deep nonprofit accounting experience to the table.

Key responsibilities

The job holder will have the following key responsibilities:

Financial management & reporting

  • Develop and implement accounting and financial functions such as workflows, systems, financial software, budget cycles and financial reports, ensuring compliance with regulations and donor requirements.
  • Oversee all financial operations including budgeting, forecasting, project-based budgets and cash flow management.
  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger functions, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
  • Lead and prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting in compliance with internal policies and legal and donor requirements.
  • Lead and prepare periodic timely and accurate financial reporting, statements, and analysis in compliance with grants budget and donor requirements.
  • Develop and implement in collaboration with the program team grant making budgets, financial forecasts and controls.
  • Coordinate audits and ensure accurate and timely preparation of audit materials.
  • Develop financial dashboards and metrics to support decision-making, ensuring accuracy and timely reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations, grant requirements, and reporting standards.
  • Develop and implement financial policies and procedures to ensure sound financial management practices.
  • Supporting fundraising efforts by providing financial analysis and reporting and assisting with grant proposal development.

Systems & controls

  • In collaboration with the Operations and People Director design, implement, and maintain robust financial systems, policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Automate and streamline workflows using AI tools and digital finance platforms.
  • In collaboration with the Operations and People Director ensure accuracy and compliance across multi-country financial operations, including currency management and tax requirements.

Compliance & risk

  • Ensure compliance with local and international regulations, grant requirements, and accounting standards.
  • In collaboration with the Operations and People Director identify financial risks and oversee organizational insurance and financial risk management frameworks.

Team & collaboration

  • In collaboration with the Operations and People Director, participate in strategic planning discussions and provide financial input to ensure the organization’s long-term financial health.
  • Supervise finance staff or external consultants, fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, inclusion and collaboration.
  • Collaborate with program, operations, and development teams to ensure financial alignment and support cross-functional planning.

Requirements:

Preferred qualifications & competencies

  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in nonprofit finance, including leadership responsibilities.
  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing financial systems, policies, and workflows from scratch.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, donor compliance, and international nonprofit financial practices.
  • Advanced proficiency in financial software and AI tools (e.g. automation, forecasting, reporting).
  • A CPA, ACCA, or equivalent certification is an asset.

Skills

  • High degree of professionalism and integrity to handle sensitive and confidential information with the utmost discretion.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
  • Fluency in English is required; additional languages are a plus.
  • Cultural Competency: understanding of diversity and inclusion issues, including race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, age, and other dimensions of diversity, and the ability to navigate complex cultural dynamics.
  • Interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills: Must be an excellent networker and team leader, with the ability to motivate and collaborate with groups working remotely.
  • Resilience: Ability to work independently and remotely, setting direction and retaining momentum with sometimes limited team collaboration on the tasks required.

Terms and conditions

Compensation will be determined according to location of hiring and the relevant salary range will be shared on request.

  • Official holidays according to the country where the contract has been signed. Local and personal cultural traditions and religious practices will be respected.
  • Annual work from home allowance equivalent to $1K USD (converted to local currency).
  • Life insurance.
  • Health care (includes vision and dental) covering family members, including legal partners, children below age of 18 and legal dependents as defined by the country of employment. The cost of the health plan or insurance may be shared between the UMI Fund and the staff member, depending on the conditions offered in the country of employment. This will be agreed at the time of hiring.
  • 20 working days annual paid vacations plus 10 days year end break.
  • Access to Headspace.com
  • 2 days of work time each calendar year to participate in volunteer work with a non-profit organization.
  • Bereavement Leave: from 2 to 20 working days paid leave according to the level of relationship with the loved one.
  • Flexible work arrangements:
    • Regular working hours: 40 hours per week, 8-hour day between 9 am and 5 pm local time. To ensure collaboration and good communication, any changes to these hours must be agreed between staff and line manager in advance and noted in the calendar shared with the team.
    • Due to the geographical distribution of our team, it may be necessary to work non-regular hours in order to participate in meetings with those located in other time zones. UMI Fund always prioritizes the well-being of its staff and strongly recommends that no one works before 6am or after 9pm. If it is necessary in exceptional situations to work at these times, staff should offset the hours no later than two days after, to ensure time for rest.

 Local regulations will always prevail and will be observed to determine the final contract conditions.
