Communications & PR Manager

Introduction

Playing for the Planet was established in 2019 with the aim of supporting the video games industry to increase its efforts with regards to sustainability across the full ecosystem of gaming. Specifically, this has focussed on decarbonising gaming studios and working to integrate green activations in games. Now with some 50 members in the Alliance, the initiative is looking for a Communications & PR Manager to support sharing our work with the broader industry.

Role Overview

We are seeking a part-time Communications & PR Manager who can take full ownership of our communications – from strategy to execution. This is a hands-on role suited for someone who is an all rounder with excellent judgment, able to operate independently, is

content-savvy, and has a basic understanding of the video games landscape.

You’ll be working alongside a small team that includes strong communications and PR backgrounds, but due to capacity constraints, are currently looking for someone who can own and execute this area. This role is a unique opportunity to work at the cutting edge of games and sustainability, contributing to high-impact projects and working alongside some of the brightest and most forward-thinking professionals in the industry.

We’re looking for a self-starter who thrives with autonomy, is curious by nature, and eager to learn in a fast-evolving space. You’ll have the chance to shape narratives, influence industry and consumer perception, and learn about how games can drive meaningful environmental change. If you’re passionate about storytelling, systemic thinking, and creative problem-solving, you’ll find plenty of room to grow in this role.

Key Responsibilities

Brand and Strategy (20% of time)

  • Design and implement Playing for the Planet’s overall comms strategy planning in collaboration with the team which enhance the outcomes of the Annual Plan.
  • Design and implement a long-term social media strategy aligned with our mission and project timelines and build and maintain an organized content calendar.
  • Develop and maintain a brand voice, editorial plan, and messaging guidelines (tone, terminology, style).
  • Suggest and implement tools and/or processes to streamline communications with a limited budget.

Content Creation (40% of time)

  • Develop a growth strategy to build Playing for the Planet’s social media presence
  • Audit existing Playing for the Planet channels and investigate new platforms for growth
  • Plan and produce weekly social media content (posts, carousels, videos) across platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, and X and track content performance to adjust strategy accordingly.
  • Create and update visual content (graphics, infographics, basic video/audio snippets where applicable)
  • Write and publish blog posts, newsletters, and project updates.
  • Craft and distribute press releases and other PR materials.
  • Keep website content up to date, including project descriptions and updates.

Media and Outreach (20% of time)

  • Build and maintain relationships with influential journalists and media outlets across games (B2B and B2C), tech, as well as environmental correspondents in elite media.
  • Identify and pitch relevant stories and angles to media.
  • Monitor coverage, mentions, events, and opportunities for visibility.

Community & Industry Awareness (20% of time)

  • Stay informed about what Alliance members are working on and amplify relevant updates.
  • Develop a clear plan and guidelines for all Alliance members that supports them to create a profile and strong comms moments on their work within the Alliance.
  • Find ways to get more engagement in the Playing for the Planet Slack channel and have all members represented there so that there is a more direct comms tool to share updates and questions with members.
  • Monitor industry trends and others active in the games x sustainability space to inform strategy and content.

Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Strong copywriting and editorial skills, with a portfolio that demonstrates range and impact.
  • Experience in creating visual assets (basic graphic design; Canva or similar tools).
  • Experience managing and executing multi-channel social media strategies.
  • Proactive and autonomous work ethic – able to prioritize and make decisions independently.
  • Affinity with and basic understanding of the video games industry.
  • Interest in learning more about the intersection of games and sustainability.
  • Fluent in English.

Desirable

  • Some years of experience in communications and PR or content strategy, length of time will be taken into consideration but not critical.
  • Existing network of media contacts across games, sustainability, tech.
  • Basic knowledge of SEO and web editing (e.g. Webflow, WordPress).
  • Familiarity with tools like Canva, Figma, or similar.

Salary and Conditions

This role is a remote contractor / freelance role with the contract issued by the Association for UK Interactive Entertainment (UKIE). The salary for this role is based on experience and expectation, for a 24 hour work week for an initial period of 6 months with the possibility for extension for the right candidate.
