Background of the Institute
The International Institute of Humanitarian Law is an independent, non-profit humanitarian association founded in 1970 in Sanremo, Italy. The Institute organizes training courses in international humanitarian law, human rights, refugee law, and related issues. It promotes dialogue by organizing international conferences, meetings, and seminars for high-level government officials, scholars, and practitioners.
The mission of the Department of International Refugee Law and Migration Law is to enhance the knowledge and skills of government officials, international organizations, civil society representatives, and academics involved in working with individuals in need of protection, including refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), stateless individuals, and migrants. Through its capacity-building initiatives and the exchange of experiences, the Department advocates for preserving human rights, thus complementing and augmenting the efforts of various stakeholders in the protection field.
The Institute enjoys a consultative status at ECOSOC, a participatory status at the Council of Europe, and observer status at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) ExCom, and with the International Organization for Migration.
Purpose of the Position
The Assistant Coordinator – Institutional Engagement supports fundraising, partnership development, communication, and outreach initiatives of the Department of International Refugee Law and Migration Law (the Department) of the International Institute of Humanitarian Law (the Institute).
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Partnership Development:
- Supports the monitoring and reporting on global, regional and local developments in the protection of refugees, internally displaced and stateless persons, and migrants to inform the determination of priority areas of intervention and outreach needs of the Department;
- Identifies avenues of cooperation with academic institutions, state institutions, civil society organizations, private and development actors, international organizations, and donors;
- Identifies, analyses, and prioritizes events, networks, and other institutional engagement and funding opportunities relevant to the Department’s work;
- Prepares briefing notes and talking points for meetings with counterparts;
- Builds and maintains a network of contacts that can support and enhance the Department’s fundraising efforts and projects implementation;
- Supports the drafting new proposals, concept notes, and work plans, including gathering required external and internal information and data, ensuring alignment with the Department’s goals and strategic direction;
- Maintains updated the Department’s mapping of potential donors and engagement plans;
- Maintains an updated list of proposals and concept notes submitted, including the application status. Upon request, represents the Department in external events and fora, effectively communicating the Department’s objectives and achievements;
Communication:
- Supports the implementation, in collaboration with the assigned focal points in the different Departments of the Institute, of a consistent and sustainable Communication Strategy for the organization;
- Develops social media content for the Department via Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, X, and other platforms: Designs, compiles, and delivers the email broadcasts on courses and initiatives through bulk email services;
- Liaises and cooperates with media departments of international organizations to access official videos and photographs;
- Coordinates press-monitoring processes to identify relevant news and developments pertinent to the capacity-sharing program of the Department;
- Assists in the research on the current situation and statistics related to refugees, internally displaced persons, stateless people, and migrants worldwide;
- Acts as the Department’s focal point for activities in coordination with the IT Manager and related to the upload of relevant content on the official website;
- Conducts any other tasks deemed necessary to achieve the Department’s objectives.
Qualifications, Experience, and Skills
Required
- University degree and at least four years of experience in the functional area, or Postgraduate and at least two years of experience in the functional area;
- Experience in analysis of current events and research for partnership development;
- Experience in coordinating the collection of information and drafting of briefings and reports;
- Experience in writing concept notes and project proposals;
- Experience in graphic design, social media content development and communication;
- Excellent command of the English language.
Desirable
- Experience in production of videos, promotional materials and others relevant for outreach and learning initiatives;
- Experience in use of AI in videos, animation, etc.
- Additional languages relevant to the Department’s work (Arabic, French, Russian, Spanish, and Serbian/Bosnian/Croatian).
