Indigenous Peoples Rights International (IPRI) is seeking a Coordinator for its Advocacy on UN Human Rights System and the Private Sector to join its growing team.
About the organization
Indigenous Peoples Rights International (IPRI) is a legally registered, non-profit global Indigenous Peoples organization that works to protect Indigenous Peoples’ rights and unite and amplify the call for justice to victims of criminalization and impunity.
It was born out of growing criminalization and attacks against Indigenous Peoples. It was established to lead and coordinate The Global Initiative to Address and Prevent Criminalization, Violence, and Impunity against Indigenous Peoples, a concerted effort to address the global challenge of Indigenous Peoples confronted with criminalization, impunity, and violence for defending their lands and territories.
This initiative is a global effort led by Indigenous Peoples, activists, advocates, and organizations to strengthen coordination, solidarity, and actions on this critical issue at all levels with the goal to improve the situation of Indigenous Peoples. The aim of this Initiative is to prevent, respond, reduce, and prevent acts of criminalization of,
and violence against indigenous peoples. It also aims to provide better protection and access to justice for actual and potential victims not only as individuals but also as communities.
About the position
The Advocacy Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that the advocacy strategy of IPRI in relation to the UN Human Rights System and Private Sector is implemented well and on a timely basis. The work of the Research Coordinator is a full-time position, requiring 40-hour work week with a Work-from-Home arrangements.
Reports to: Executive Director
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure proper coordination, management, supervision and guidance of the IPRI Advocacy team for the implementation of the advocacy plan and activities in a timely and efficient manner
- Develop and lead IPRI’s advocacy strategies related to the UN human rights mechanisms (e.g., Special Procedures, Treaty Bodies, Universal Periodic Review) and private sector accountability and related mechanisms (e.g., UNGPs, OECD Guidelines, ESG frameworks).
- Identify and prioritize key opportunities for engagement at global, regional, and national levels, in coordination with Indigenous partners and allies.
- Coordinate submissions, reports, and briefings to UN bodies, including follow-up on cases and communications.
- Facilitate constructive engagement with corporations, business networks, and investor platforms to advance Indigenous Peoples’ rights in the context of business operations and investments.
- Facilitate technical and strategic support to Indigenous partners and defenders in accessing and influencing relevant human rights and corporate accountability processes.
- Assist in developing advocacy materials on documented cases related to criminalization, land rights, and corporate abuses for submission to UN and other accountability mechanisms.
- Represent IPRI in relevant advocacy spaces, coalitions, and working groups at the UN, in multistakeholder platforms, and in civil society networks as designated by ED
- Build and maintain strong working relationships and networks for collaboration and
partnerships with Indigenous Peoples’ organizations, civil society allies, and institutional
stakeholders.
- Collaborate with the communications team to amplify advocacy messages, campaigns, and outcomes across platforms.
- Work closely with the IPRI secretariat and other program teams to ensure alignment of
advocacy work with IPRI’s overall strategy and priorities.
- Assist in fundraising if needed in support of the advocacy programme and institutional support for IPRI
- Contribute to the overall strategic direction of IPRI by participating in project planning, reporting, evaluation, and organizational decision-making as an active member of the Management Team.
Essential skills and experience
The candidate should be an Indigenous Person, culture-sensitive, have high level of integrity, accountability, and punctuality and be willing to work beyond normal working hours. He/she should be a good team player.
Minimum Qualifications
- Obtained at least a Bachelor’s Degree in any social science.
- At least 5 years’ work experience on evidenced-based advocacy on UN HR System and or Private Sector.
- At least 3 years’ experience in program coordination and management.
- Highly knowledgeable on indigenous peoples and their rights.
- Skilled in report-writing, communication, advocacy and networking.
- Highly committed in advancing the rights of indigenous peoples.
- Strong work ethic.
Other Qualifications
Proficiency in English is a requirement. Proficiency in a second language (Spanish or French) is an advantage.
