Project Assistant (Learning Assistant) – English and Spanish Speaker

Location: remote/home-based with reliable internet connection
Contractual modality: 12 months consultancy contract with the possibility of extension
Remuneration:  Euro 1,100 to 1,500/month

Background of the Institute
The International Institute of Humanitarian Law is an independent, non-profit humanitarian association founded in 1970 in Sanremo, Italy. The Institute organizes training courses in international humanitarian law, human rights, refugee law, and related issues. It promotes dialogue by organizing international conferences, meetings, and seminars for high-level government officials, scholars, and practitioners.

The mission of the Department of International Refugee Law and Migration Law is to enhance the knowledge and skills of government officials, international organizations, civil society representatives, and academics involved in working with individuals in need of protection, including refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), stateless individuals, and migrants. Through its capacity-building initiatives and the exchange of experiences, the Department advocates for preserving human rights, thus complementing and augmenting the efforts of various stakeholders in the protection field.

The Institute enjoys a consultative status at ECOSOC, a participatory status at the Council of Europe, and observer status at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) ExCom, and with the International Organization for Migration.

Purpose of the role
By closely working with Course Coordinators, the Project Assistant (Learning Assistant) will provide overall support in planning, organizing, and carrying out courses and initiatives implemented by the Department.   The Project Assistant is responsible for collecting data/research, graphic designing, preparing PowerPoint presentations, setting up and updating the Online Learning Platform, and providing technical and administrative support during course and initiative implementation.

Primary duties responsibilities

  • Supports course and initiatives planning, organization, implementation, and follow-up activities.
  • Contributes to developing, updating, and managing the Online Learning Platform.  
  • Attend meetings with facilitators to brief them on the Department’s specific approach to course delivery, including the use of online learning tools (e.g., Zoom for Education, Moodle) and methods.
  • Contributes to the research, design, and preparation of modules and learning sessions. 
  • Provides occasional support to the Coordinators in the design of new courses and update materials and teaching methodologies for existing ones.  
  • Conducts research and prepares reports, graphic materials/infographics on the current situation and statistics related to refugees, internally displaced persons, stateless people, and migrants worldwide.  
  • Supports in the design of PowerPoint, Canva and other presentations tools.
  • Follows up with participants during and after the courses, providing technical or administrative support when needed.
  • Assists in opening, closing, and moderating sessions, both for online and face-to-face courses.  
  •  Manages correspondence with participants regarding course logistics and other information.
  • Supports in translations needed (e.g., correspondence with participants, course content, broadcasts). 
  • Assist with monitoring and evaluation activities, including collecting and organizing feedback or data in Excel spreadsheets.
  • Provide support for communication tasks, such as creating simple graphic designs for social media posts or newsletters, preparing and sending email broadcasts (e.g. via Brevo), and sourcing suitable images or visuals for digital content.
  • Conducts any other task relevant to the Department’s program as assigned by the coordinators. 

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills
Required 

  • University degree in social sciences focusing on Educational Science, Training for Adults, Digital Learning/Digital Communication, Graphic Design, and/or Instructional Design.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish (both verbal and written).
  • Experience in organizing online courses and in-person events.
  • Knowledge of online learning tools and digital communications platforms, such as Canva, Moodle, Zoom for Education, and Articulate 360.
  • Strong skills and experience in graphic design.
  • Strong organization and communication (written and oral) skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy is a must.
  • Ability to set schedules, meet deadlines, manage multiple tasks, and work as part of a team in an international environment.

 
Desirable

  • Experience in digital content creation, including photography, videography, graphic design, and editing.
  • Knowledge of social media management and using communication tools such as Brevo.
  • Working knowledge of other UN languages, such as French, Arabic, and Russian.
  • Experience in instructional design of learning programs and teaching methodologies.
  • Background or lived experience on forced displacement or statelessness.
  • Motivation and passion for working in an organization supporting the protection of refugees, internally displaced people, stateless persons, and migrants.
  • Experience working directly with people needing protection and groups with specific needs.
