What costs are not covered? The Mandela Rhodes Foundation does not pay for your application fees for university, or for the accreditation of your existing degrees through SAQA, which may be an entry requirement to your course. We also do not provide financial support for visa applications. How do the finances work? Allowances are paid twice a year. You will be required to provide proof of registration at the start of the year, and a progress report from your university two weeks after the start of the second semester. Your tuition and registration fees are paid directly to the tertiary institution, while all other allowances are paid to you. Any amount due to or owed by you prior to becoming a Mandela Rhodes Scholar, is your sole responsibility, and the MRF will not become involved in any way. Does the MRF provide support and assistance with my visa process? No. Applying for your visa and paying for any associated costs is your responsibility. You will need a visa in order to take up the scholarship in South Africa. It is very important to start as early as possible. If your visa is delayed you may not be able to start your academic programme and the Leadership Development Programme on time. This could result in you losing the scholarship. They may require that you get your qualifications verified by the South African Qualifications Agency (SAQA). This process can take some time and delay both your university acceptance and your visa. Start early. Please be reminded that should you not qualify for a Masters Programme you could apply for an Honours Programme. NB: If you are not accepted to university timeously, you will not be able to get your study visa in time for the commencement of the programme in January, and you will not be able accept the scholarship. Deadline: 24 March 2025 Youth Empowerment Fund (YEF), a partnership between the European Union (EU) and the Global Youth Mobilization (GYM), an initiative of the Big Six Youth Organisations (Big Six), provides direct financial support for youth-led initiatives focusing on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals at the local level. The Youth Empowerment Fund also aims to reach young people from under-represented backgrounds, including those facing challenges relating to their socio-economic background, gender, disability, marginalization, climate change, and more. Hence, many Youth-Led Solutions support young people and their communities in overcoming these situations of vulnerability. We are now accepting applications from 3 March 2025 to 24 March 2025, 2359 CET. Why Apply for the Youth Empowerment Fund Open Call? The Youth Empowerment Fund seeks to break down barriers to funding to youth initiatives and organisations and engage, empower and connect young people to create local solutions to the world’s biggest challenges. An individual person or an informal group of young people can apply to get small scale micro-grants for their projects between 500-1500 EUR, while registered youth-led organization may apply for funding up to 5000 EUR. A key priority and a special focus of the Youth Empowerment Fund is to fund youth-led initiatives supporting under-represented and vulnerable communities, such as those affected by climate change, people with disabilities or chronic illness, and people facing gender-based barriers. Another special focus of the Youth Empowerment Fund is to support projects that address climate change, environmental protection or sustainability. Fellowship for Apprentices & Early Career Professionals We aim to bring diverse perspectives to science by offering opportunities to talented early career individuals without an academic background. This fellowship can fund internships, research projects, personal development, and support for young parents pursuing further training. Who can apply? This fellowship is for apprentices, dual students or early career professionals without a university degree and less than five years of employment. Applicants must pursue their current apprenticeship or profession in a German-speaking country (Germany, Austria or Switzerland). We particularly encourage applications from parents with children and people with German as a second language. Time taken for parental leave or other exceptional circumstances does not contribute to the five-year period. What can I apply for? Applicants are eligible for up to 10,000€ in funding and can undertake fellowships for up to twelve months. The fellowship can be used for internships, research projects, personal development (including language courses), as well as to support parents undertaking further training in Germany and abroad.
